Nuclear Energy Industry

Enter and Compete in Tennessee's Growing Nuclear Supply Chain

The nuclear energy industry in Tennessee is expanding. To qualify and compete for nuclear contracts, manufacturers must demonstrate capability across five areas. Most Tennessee manufacturers entering the nuclear market have gaps in at least two or three.

Nuclear Supply Chain Questions, Answered

Is my facility ready to pursue nuclear contracts? +

That is exactly the question the Nuclear Readiness Assessment is designed to answer. Most manufacturers do not know what nuclear customers will actually require of them until they are already in a conversation with a prime contractor or facility operator. The assessment gives you that picture in advance — across quality, cybersecurity, supply chain, operations, and workforce — so you can decide whether and how to pursue nuclear opportunities with your eyes open.

Do we need NQA-1 to do nuclear work? +

It depends on the scope of work. NQA-1 is required for safety-related nuclear work — components, materials, or services classified as safety-related by the nuclear facility operator. Some non-safety-related nuclear work can be performed under ISO 9001 or AS9100. The Readiness Assessment will identify exactly what your target nuclear customers will require based on the type of work you are pursuing. Learn more about NQA-1 →

We already have ISO 9001. How much more work is nuclear? +

ISO 9001 is a meaningful head start — the documentation discipline and process structure carry over directly. But nuclear adds layers that ISO 9001 does not address: commercial grade dedication, nuclear-specific procurement controls, more stringent traceability requirements, cybersecurity compliance, and an internal audit program that satisfies NQA-1 auditor qualification criteria. How much additional work depends on your current quality maturity. The Readiness Assessment will tell you specifically.

How long does it take to become nuclear-ready? +

It varies significantly based on starting point and scope. A manufacturer with ISO 9001 already in place pursuing a defined nuclear scope can be audit-ready in nine to twelve months. A manufacturer starting from scratch across quality, cybersecurity, and supply chain should plan for eighteen months or more. The Readiness Assessment gives you a realistic timeline before you commit to any engagement.

Does Tennessee MEP deliver all of these services directly? +

Most services — quality systems, NQA-1 preparation, continuous improvement, manufacturing technology, workforce development, and supply chain — are delivered directly by Tennessee MEP manufacturing consultants. Health and safety training is delivered in collaboration with the UT CIS Health & Safety group. Government contracting and APEX Accelerator services are delivered through our UT CIS sister programs. All services are coordinated through a single Tennessee MEP Solutions Consultant so you are never managing multiple entry points.
