"I have been extremely impressed with UT CIS. The Value Stream Mapping activity that was previously set up for Knox Wire Harnesses via UT CIS was terrific for our team. It prepared our team to help the company graduate to the next stage. I was also extremely impressed with the Vital Learning leadership class we sent our managers to. I noticed a difference in how they handled situations with employees after taking the course. Thank you for everything you guys do!" - Mark Barath, Chief Operating Officer at Knox Wire Harness

About

Knox Wire Harnesses is a manufacturer/producer of wiring harnesses and is located in Knoxville, TN. The company has ten employees. Knox Wire Harnesses has served both the marine industry and the local Knoxville community. Their centralized presence allows them to forge strong connections with local businesses and residents, reflecting their commitment to supporting the area that supports them. By delivering high-quality wiring harnesses and fostering community engagement, Knox Wire Harnesses strives to contribute positively to Knoxville's growth and success.

Knox Wire Harnesses was created to better serve commercial customers of Willin Solutions. Traditionally a military custom cable manufacturer, Willin Solutions started receiving a number of requests from commercial customers for wire harnesses. As a response, a team was assembled with over twenty years wire and electrical harness experience, Knox Wire Harnesses was created. With current and future customers in mind, a manufacturing facility was launched in Knoxville TN. Knox Wire Harnesses has the experience to assist at any level of wire harness design and the ability to deliver completed harnesses on a large scale.  https://www.knoxwireharnesses.com/

The Challenge

This proposal is the result of Knox Wire Harnesses’ Scott Zech's inquiry into UT CIS Leadership Training capabilities. Effective Leadership Training was deemed to be the best route to enhance the skills of Knox Wire Harness's leaders allowing them to be more effective and efficient.

MEP's Role

Rick Durham one of TMEP’s key leadership subject matter experts, conducted the Vital Learning Essential Skills for Leadership on-site for Knox Wire Harness. The training was delivered over 12 days and the key topics covered were Essential Skills For Leadership, Essential Skills of Communicating, Coaching Job Skills, Improving Work Habits, Effective Discipline, Providing Performance Feedback, Resolving Conflicts, Managing Complaints, Supporting Change, Developing Performance Goals and Standards, Communicating Up, Delegating, Team Development, Developing and Coaching Others.

As most of the Knoxville Wire Harnesses supervisory staff were in leadership roles for the first times in their individual careers, the leadership training was very helpful. The training provided their front-line management team with an enhanced set of skills that they needed to better manage their employees and provided a common set of practices for the supervisory staff as well. The Knox Wire Harnesses executive team noted how much better the supervisory team was able to perform in their roles after they had experienced the training.
