In his own words, Stephen Jeter has “the pleasure of driving around East Tennessee to help people find jobs, write resumes and help them get back on track.” Jeter is an American Job Center (AJC) Career Specialist and accomplishes this through his work with the Mobile American Job Center. Much like the brick-and-mortar locations, all Mobile AJCs are staffed with friendly Career Specialists that can provide assistance to job seekers with job searching, resumes, interviewing, as well as providing information about training/education opportunities.Mobile AJCs help bring job-seeking resources to locations and individuals that may have barriers preventing them from visiting an AJC office location.
Jeter has been involved with youth development throughout his career, and he is happy to continue that work with the AJC. While the Mobile AJC serves job seekers of all ages, Jeter helps students write their first resume, apply for jobs, and figure out some career goals.
This Career Specialist’s most memorable experience during his time with the AJC is when he had the opportunity to work alongside a person he had helped apply for a job earlier that year. “It was just so rewarding getting to meet somebody I was able to help gain employment.”
Jeter’s advice to someone facing barriers to employment is to “come see us (the AJC); start at the beginning and ask questions. Don’t worry, we will do our very best to help!” He also suggests that job seekers should
come into the experience with their “eyes wide open” because there is a wealth of information the AJC can provide. In fact, each mobile American Job Center has computers, as well as copy and fax machines available to job seekers. The computers onboard the Mobile AJC have internet access, Microsoft Office software and access to jobs available throughout the state. These jobs are categorized by industry and are also available on Jobs4TN.gov.
The Mobile American Job Center serves all job seekers, from veterans to high school students to senior citizens to justice involved individuals, and so many more.
The UT Center for Industrial Services proudly serves as the One Stop Operator for the East Tennessee American Job Centers.
